Leaf chains are steel chains with a simple link plate and pin construction. The chain number refers to the pitch and the lacing of the links. The chains have particular features such as high tensile strength for each section area, that enables the design of smaller machines. There are A- and B- type chains in this series and both the BL6 and AL6 Series comprise the same pitch as RS60. Lastly, these chains cannot be driven with sprockets.
Comparably, in roller chains, all of the link plates maintain higher fatigue resistance because of the compressive stress of press fits, while in leaf chains, only two outer plates are press fit. The tensile strength of leaf chains is high and the maximum allowable tension is low. While handling leaf chains it is important to confer with the manufacturer's manual to be able to ensure the safety factor is outlined and use safety guards all the time. It is a good idea to apply utmost care and use extra safety guards in functions where the consequences of chain failure are severe.
Higher tensile strength is a direct correlation to the use of much more plates. As the use of much more plates does not enhance the utmost allowable tension directly, the number of plates may be limited. The chains require regular lubrication since the pins link directly on the plates, producing an extremely high bearing pressure. Using a SAE 30 or 40 machine oil is frequently advised for nearly all applications. If the chain is cycled more than one thousand times every day or if the chain speed is more than 30m per minute, it will wear extremely rapidly, even with constant lubrication. Hence, in either of these conditions using RS Roller Chains will be more suitable.
The AL-type of chains must only be used under particular situations like for example when wear is not a big problem, when there are no shock loads, the number of cycles does not go beyond 100 daily. The BL-type will be better suited under different situations.
The stress load in parts would become higher if a chain utilizing a lower safety factor is selected. If the chain is also used among corrosive situations, it could easily fatigue and break very quick. Doing regular maintenance is essential when operating under these kinds of situations.
